Downtown District Cooling

Austin Energy’s two District Cooling Downtown Plants are located at 3rd and San Antonio Streets and 5th and Sabine Streets.

This 33,000 ton–capable system provides chilled water to several downtown buildings which include:

The District Cooling Downtown Plants feature the largest ice thermal storage system in Central Texas. The downtown system currently serves approximately 13,968,531 square feet of customer facilities equaling 34,258 tons of peak cooling.

We have initiated a project to build a third chilled water plant in the Central Business District. The plant will be on Sandra Muraida Way just east of the Gables Park Tower development. Read about the Crescent Chiller Project

North/Central Domain District Cooling

The Domain District Cooling System is located in northwest Austin, along North MoPac (Loop 1) between Braker Lane and Burnet Road.

It serves a mix of retail, office, medial, high tech, and computer gaming facilities, and provides continuous cooling services to The Domain's tenants, such as:

The Domain plant currently serves approximately 3,899,124 square feet of customer facilities equaling 9,518 tons of peak cooling.

As of January 2014, the 24,000 ton-hour thermal energy storage tank was completed and is in service. This tank is used to shift load during peak energy usage.

Mueller Redevelopment Cooling, Heat, and Power (CHP) Plant

This innovative energy center is on land redeveloped from Austin’s decommissioned Robert Mueller Municipal Airport.

The Mueller Energy Center is among the most environmentally-friendly energy systems in the world.

It provides chilled water cooling, steam for sterilization, and onsite electric production to Seton’s Dell Children’s Medical Center.
