52nd Annual Zilker Holiday Tree Installation

October 19, 2018

A 52-year tradition will continue Monday, October 22 when Austin Energy crews transform the Zilker moonlight tower into the Zilker Holiday Tree.

The moonlight tower in Zilker Park is one of the original 31 towers that provided the City of Austin its first urban lighting system in 1895. Only 17 of Austin’s original 31 moonlight towers remain and are the only working moonlight towers in the world. Over the years, the moonlight towers and the Zilker Holiday Tree have become Austin icons and a cherished part of the community’s culture.

The 155-foot-tall Zilker Holiday Tree is bedecked with 39 streamers each containing 81 red, yellow, green, and blue bulbs. The strategic placement of the yellow bulbs on each string gives the tree its distinctive and dizzying swirl pattern.

In 2016, the Zilker moonlight tower was taken down, repaired, refurbished, and erected with energy-efficient, LED light bulbs.

A tree lighting ceremony and celebration of 52 years of the Zilker Holiday Tree will take place on Sunday, November 25, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The tree will be lit by the winners of a children's Zilker Holiday Tree art contest sponsored by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. The tree will be on display from 6 p.m. until midnight every night through January 1.
