June 12, 2018

The Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) has named Austin Energy the 2018 SEPA Power Players Public Power Utility of the Year. Now in its 10th year, the SEPA Power Players Awards honor utilities making the transition to a clean, modern energy future.

Chosen by an independent panel of judges with diverse experience in the electric power industry, Austin Energy and winners in six other categories will be honored Tuesday, July 10, at SEPA’s Grid Evolution Summit in Washington, D.C.

“Innovation is part of the foundation upon which we are built,” said Jackie Sargent, Austin Energy General Manager. “We are always looking for creative solutions that deliver better service and make Austin a more livable city and we are proud to be recognized for that innovation.”

SEPA is recognizing Austin Energy for thought leadership on renewable energy and Distributed Energy Resources, including the Austin SHINES program, which integrates solar and energy battery storage; the Community Solar Program and the utility’s Electric Vehicle Program.

“This year’s SEPA Power Players represent a diverse set of technologies and initiatives, from low-income community solar, to broad grid modernization efforts, to the digital software needed to optimize our electric power system,” said Julia Hamm, the group’s President and CEO. “Austin Energy is but one example of the industry’s spirit of innovation and leadership.”

Dr. Charlie Gay, director of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office, also recognized Austin Energy’s innovation and progress. Austin Energy received $4.3 million from the Energy Department in 2016 to research solar and storage solutions.

“Our office continues to be impressed by the Austin Energy team’s innovation. They have created a proof of concept and built momentum for utility-scale integration of solar and storage systems,” said Dr. Gay. “Exciting progress has been made and we look forward to seeing more results of their work.”
