Plugged In Electric Vehicle

Back in 2005, before there was a Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf, Austin Energy started the Plug-In Partners campaign to convince automakers that a consumer market exists in the United States for electric vehicles. The campaign started amid a worldwide energy crisis and growing national concerns about our country’s dependence on foreign oil. A mounting body of evidence also linked automobile emissions as a contributor to climate change.

Leadership in Energy Independence

Austin Energy led the country by promoting electric vehicles as the road toward energy independence for our nation. More than 500 partners, including 49 of the nation’s largest cities, 28 countries and local governments, and almost 300 businesses and public utilities responded by signing petitions pledging to buy 8,300 plug-in electric vehicles for their fleets if automakers would manufacture the vehicles. In late 2006, several automakers unveiled plans to begin manufacturing electric vehicles.

Today, our Plug-In Austin network has more than 200 stations, and serves over 1,000 EV drivers in the Austin area. Of these drivers, over 600 subscribe to our Plug-In Everywhere program, allowing them to use our full network of charging stations for just $50 per year. We also offer rebates for two-wheeled electric vehicle purchases and home charging station installations.
