Community Engagement Opportunities

Repowering Downtown Austin Project

Stakeholder input is an essential part of the design and construction of a substation plan that is supported by the public. Austin Energy is committed to active and engaging communication with residents, individuals, community leaders, businesses, and organizations to ensure preferences and opinions are heard and considered for inclusion in the project.

Repowering Downtown — Rainey Street Substation

The Austin City Council approved the award and execution of the construction contract for the Rainey Street Substation. We are excited to achieve this milestone and could not have done it without collaboration and input from the community.

Community Engagement for Repowering Downtown and the Rainey Street Substation

Community engagement for the design of the surrounding wall and property landscaping occurred in three phases. Each phase encompassed the entire effort to share information, collect input, and involve key stakeholders and members of the community in the process.

The general timeline and goals for each phase were as follows:

Phase 1, Summer 2018 — Introduced the project and collected input on concerns, desires, and preferences.

Phase 2, Spring 2019 — Presented concepts and work with the public to identify preferences.

Phase 3, Summer/Fall 2019 — Presented a plan and collect feedback for refinements.

Phase 4, Fall 2021 —Meet the Contractor event and start of construction
