Austin Energy unveils the first commercial Solar Standard Offer project, boosting the grid with local solar
December 3, 2025
Less than a year after elevating the city's clean energy future with the launch of its innovative Solar Standard Offer, Austin Energy is proud to showcase the initiative's first commercial project.
Solar system owner Radial Power and contractor Axis Solar installed 812 warehouse rooftop solar panels, capable of generating nearly 660,000 kWh of solar power per year. With extensive rooftop space, abundant sunshine and an innovative electric utility, Austin businesses have a unique opportunity to add megawatts of rooftop solar power to the grid.
"The Solar Standard Offer is a game-changer," said Richard Genece, Austin Energy Vice President for Customer Energy Solutions. "This first-of-its-kind approach empowers property owners, solar developers and the Austin community to work together toward a carbon-free future. It's a major opportunity to meet our climate goals and create long-term value for everyone involved."
A Revolution in Solar Accessibility
The Solar Standard Offer allows commercial property owners to either host solar panels on their rooftops or lease their roof space to third-party solar developers. The energy produced is sold to Austin Energy, directly feeding into the city’s growing renewable energy supply and helping to power thousands of local homes, including those of low-income residents through the Community Solar Program.
If a business is leasing out its rooftop or parking lot space, there are no upfront costs for property owners. This means businesses can start generating passive income immediately while simultaneously contributing to Austin's sustainability goals.
Austin Energy compensates solar panel owners for the electricity their systems produce. Rates are reviewed every three years to ensure fair payments, protect customers and maintain affordable investment opportunities for all.
