EPA Recognizes Austin Energy with ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award
April 4, 2014
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Austin Energy with a 2014 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year - Sustained Excellence Award for its continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency. Austin Energy’s accomplishments will be recognized in Washington, D.C. on April 29, 2014.
Austin Energy, which is winning its 10th ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award, will be honored for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency.Austin Energy completed its first energy conservation plant in 2006 by offsetting 700 megawatts of traditional generation through energy efficiency programs since 1982. The Utility is almost half way through offsetting another 800 MW to complete its goal of a second conservation power plant by 2020.
Austin Energy’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program offers customers rebates and low-interest loans through an outside lender to help make energy efficiency improvements to their homes. Rebates can cover an average of 28%, or more than $2,000 of the cost of total improvements. Customers also have the option of financing up to $15,000 in energy efficiency improvements with a low-interest loan from an Austin Energy lending partner.
Last year more than 2,100 customers participated in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program offsetting about 4 MW of peak demand during the hottest part of the summer and saving the customers, as a group, more than 4.3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity or about $435,000 in savings. In the last five years alone, more than 13,100 customers have participated in the program, saving a combined 25.9 million kWh or more than $2.5 million in savings as a group.
Across the U.S., top companies and organizations are leading the way toward a more energy-efficient future through their participation in ENERGY STAR. Through 2013, with help from ENERGY STAR, American families and businesses have saved $297 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
“Austin Energy has earned EPA’s highest ENERGY STAR award – the 2014 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award – because of their unwavering commitment to helping consumers become increasingly more energy efficient,” said EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe.
The 2014 Partner of the Year - Sustained Excellence Awards are given to a variety of organizations to recognize their contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through superior energy efficiency. These winners have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals, and employing innovative energy efficiency approaches.
These awards recognize ongoing leadership across the ENERGY STAR program, including energy-efficient products, services, new homes, and buildings in the commercial, industrial, and public sectors. Award winners are selected from the 16,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
