Power Quality and Reliability

Austin Energy works to ensure that all customers receive the highest level of power quality possible at all times. Power quality is the term most often used to describe variations in voltage, current or frequency. These variations can cause equipment or appliances to work improperly. Computers and the hi-tech industry are the most sensitive to fluctuations in power quality.

Austin Energy provides specialized technical and engineering support to hi-tech companies. We recommend equipment and products available to compensate for voltage sags or to provide backup power.

For the system as a whole, the Utility performs regular maintenance. We also install equipment to help guard against small animals and to deflect the effects of lightning strikes. Our maintenance program also targets the worst performing circuits each year so that we consistently give special attention to areas of greatest need.

Occasionally, power quality problems occur on the customer’s side of the meter. This means there is a problem with their equipment or with wiring in their business or home. While these problems cannot be repaired by the Utility, Austin Energy staff may make recommendations to help the customer resolve the issue.
