Commercial Electric Bill Charges

Three components make up the core of a commercial electric bill: the Customer Charge, the Energy Charge, and the Fuel Charge.

Customer Charge
The Customer Charge is a $6/month fee that covers billing associated costs, including items like meter reading, payment processing, and postage.

Energy Charge
The Energy Charge covers the cost of operating and maintaining the Austin Energy system and its debt obligations, including the cost of power plants and power lines.

To calculate the energy charge, multiply your specific commercial energy rate by the total number of kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed during the monthly billing period.

Fuel Charge
The Fuel Charge covers the cost of the fuel needed to generate electricity. This charge is a dollar-for-dollar pass through to the customer — Austin Energy does not profit from monies collected through the fuel charge.

To calculate the fuel charge, multiply the current fuel factor by the total number of kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed during the monthly billing period.

Green Power Charge for GreenChoice®
The Green Power Charge replaces the standard Fuel Charge for customers who subscribe to the GreenChoice® Renewable Energy Program.

To calculate the Green Power Charge, multiply the appropriate Green Power Rate by the total number of kilowatt hours (kWh) consumed during the monthly billing period.

Other Fees and Charges
You can learn more about other fees and charges that may appear on your bill by checking the Fee Schedule.
