Austin Energy and the Smart Grid
Austin Energy is smartening-up our electric grid by replacing mechanical electric meters with state-of-the-art automated meters. There is no extra charge to our customers.

A smart grid will help us:

Serve you better
Improve reliability and efficiency
Save scarce resources
Protect the environment

The upgraded digital meters offer many advantages. Immediately, they are easier to read. But this is only the beginning. Eventually, they will allow us to provide next-generation services, including:

Remote meter reading
Faster outage response
Advanced billing, payment, and energy-management options

What to expect as we change out meters
First, we will inform you by postcard ahead of our change-out visit.

Then, when we come to exchange your meter, you can expect:

Installers with Austin Energy badges to arrive in clearly marked vehicles
Installers to knock on your door, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., before starting any work
A brief disruption to your electric service
A green door hanger confirming the upgrade and providing contact information
Your next bill to include two readings—one closing out the old meter; the other recording use on the new meter

We will not exchange your meter if it is behind a locked gate or obstructed in any way. We will not exchange your meter if there is a dog in your yard. In such cases, we will leave a red door hanger with contact information and instructions on scheduling an installation.
