Electrical Safety

PowerTown Demonstrations
The PowerTown demonstration teaches electrical safety to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders:

What happens if you fly your kite too close to electrical wires?
What are those humming green and grey boxes in the yard?
What happens when extension cords fray?

PowerTown is a model of a city. Included are miniature homes, people, cars and low-level electrical currents that visually demonstrate hazards. Austin Energy safety personnel use the model to demonstrate electrical safety issues to students.

Demonstrations are fun and safe. Staff uses safety gear and equipment while presenting.

A 20-minute video called The Shocking Truth helps students understand how electricity works for our benefit but also how it can be dangerous if not used safely. It’s a presentation sure to have students raising their hands and asking questions.
