Austin Energy
Electric System
Electric System Statistics
The Austin Energy electric system serves
a 437 square mile area. That includes Austin and portions
of Travis and Williamson counties. It consists of:
- Over 5,000 miles of overhead
primary and secondary power lines
- Over 4,000 miles of underground primary and secondary
lines
- 48 substations
The reliability of the Austin Energy electric
system is better than the industry average. We have challenged
ourselves to achieve SAIDI (outage duration) and SAIFI (outage
frequency) ratings by 2005 that are among the best in the
nation.
Tree Pruning Reduces Outages and Improved
Reliability
Since 1999, Austin Energy has improved
reliability by investing millions of dollars in equipment
upgrades and increased maintenance. We have also expanded
our tree pruning
program. Tree pruning is critical to system reliability,
especially during storms. Outages have dropped by better than
60% in neighborhoods where tree pruning has occurred.
Outage Response Crew Ready 24/7
Austin Energy maintains 10 crews on
standby around-the-clock ready to respond quickly to outages.
We also have installed a new outage management system. It
helps us better pinpoint the cause of an outage and to more
efficiently assign crews to make repairs.
Power Quality Monitoring for Commercial
Customers
We work very closely with power sensitive
companies such as high tech manufacturing facilities. Austin
Energy offers a full range of services to provide backup power
and associated services that allow companies to monitor
their electrical use online. |
